Sometimes when the world gets to be too much, you just want to strip away all the baggage and run. And sometimes you’re a band who has a good idea for a tour supporting your new album, so you do basically the same thing.

For Okkervil River, the second one is what we’re talking about. The new album is called Away. For those who haven’t heard it, stop reading this now and go listen to it. It’s okay, we’ll wait.

And just for kicks, check out their new music video for “Mary on a Wave”

It’s deliciously weird. Half the video seems to involve a feral child taking down some men in suits running in a forest, where they totally don’t belong. It’s definitely a metaphor right?

The other half of the video looks like they forgot to save it after they made it, but lucky for them it was shown again on TV, so they taped it on the old VCR.

And then the feral child ends up in the VCR recording where she meets God who reveals the meaning of life is a goldfish. Or something…

More to the point, Okkervil River has long had a sound that begged to be seen in a close, intimate, acoustic setting. And that’s what they’re delivering with a four-show-only, exclusive West Coast kick as an acoustic trio.

As frontman Will Sheff told Consequence of Sound:

“We wanted to alternate the big rock band thing with something smaller and more songwriting-centered and spontaneous. After we had such a rewarding year with Away it seemed like a fun idea to play some up close and personal shows, and include requests and surprises.”

Okkervil River is packing up and heading west this May and you should catch them if you can.
