May is Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month and local council member David Ryu has partnered with the concert arm of Wong Fu Productions, International Secret Agents, to put on Identity LA. This music festival is completely free and open the the public. It will take place right in front of Los Angeles City Hall in Grand Park.
A number of prominent Asian and Pacific American artists have already been announced as part of the lineup, including Dean, Us The Duo, Giraffage, starRo, Year of the Ox, Kronika, Doctors & Engineers, Dj Zo, Tenelle, MISO, SAAY, and 2xxx! with potentially more special guests yet to be announced. The artists cover both a mix of genres, from R&B to hip-hop to indie pop, and a range of heritages, from Chinese to Indian to Filipino to Samoan and more.
The hosts of the event are also prominent members of the LA Asian and Pacific American community, including Wong Fu Productions, Far East Movement, NBC4’s Shanna Mendiola, Brooklyn Shanti, Dia Frampton, and Khalif Boyd.
The event also promises to be a showcase for the accomplishments and the future of the Asian and Pacific American community. From musical, social, cultural, and economic (they did invite the politicians), Asian and Pacific Angelenos will be recognized and featured throughout the day for their role in shaping the city of Los Angeles and the wider world.
Also, let’s kick around some stereotypes while we’re here (I’m Chinese-American myself so I feel like I can do that). There will be great food from several food trucks because Asians know their food (why do you think the lines for the popular food places are full of Asians?). However, selfie sticks are banned, so leave them at home (I know you own one).
