With Phase II of their tour right around the corner, the highly sought-after pairing are proud to unveil their newest single, a remix of Royksopp‘s “Never Ever.” Half of Hotel Garuda Aseem Mangaokar says, “I first heard of Royksopp in the FIFA ’06 video game soundtrack, but only recently started listening to their music in depth. Chris Gavino (the other half of HG) and I both liked the song ‘Never Ever’ so much. We wanted to put our own twist on the track, and though it took us a lot of trial and error to get the vibe right, we’re really excited with the outcome and grateful to be given the opportunity to release it officially.”
Four Over Four asked the duo a few fun and personal questions about food and pets before they head out on the second leg of their tour.
Pick one for a pet: which would it be, Capybara or a Wallaby?
Manila Killa (Chris) – I’d definitely go for a Capybara. They look super cute – I’m low key scared of wallabies because some of them are super buff and could probably knock me out.
Candle Weather (Aseem) – Wallaby is cute af
After touring all over North America and being a notable foodie, what has been the best meal on the road so far?
MK – I just had these tacos in Charlotte, North Carolina that were surprisingly excellent. The meal we had at Bang Bang in San Diego was pretty good too – an array of fusion asian food that hit the spot right before we got on to play.
CW – It’s a tie for me between two places in San Francisco. Bernal Star has incredible brunch food, and I love their cinnamon french toast. My buddy runs a company called Odang Udon that specializes in fresh Udon noodles, and their City Bowl used to be the first thing I would reach for. Literally upon landing in San Francisco, I would go straight there before even checking in to my hotel. The food truck isn’t around anymore, but they sell their noodles packaged now, and they’re awesome.
Worst hotel experience?
MK – I had just gotten off Holy Ship, and my manager and I decided to book a cheap hotel for the day because we were flying out the next day. I woke up early the day of our flight to a friendly cockroach walking around in the sink. I immediately grabbed all my stuff, called an uber, and ran away.
CW – Honestly haven’t had any really bad ones, although I could count on two hands the number of times housekeeping has knocked on the door way too early in the morning.
3 artists you’re into at the moment and why?
MK – Point Point, Malaa, and Royal. Point Point have the most unique chords I’ve heard in a while, and there’s something so cinematic about their music. I always tell my friends that Point Point could score a film, and it’d be absolutely beautiful. Malaa is definitely my favorite house artist right now. Aside from his cool “who is malaa?” brand, the music put out by the artist is some of the best house music I’ve heard. As for Royal – he’s a day 1 homie and after getting off tour as Manila Killa with him just now, I absolutely fell in love with his most recent EP “Everything Happens.”
CW – I’d say Jessie Reyez, Whitney, and Bon Iver. Jessie Reyez because she’s an up and coming singer from Toronto and I’m obsessed with her music, her voice is so unique and distinctive. Whitney – Oh man, every song on their debut album “Light Upon The Lake” is like a warm hug and hot chocolate. ‘No Woman’ is possibly my favorite. As for Bon Iver, I’m still obsessed with 22, A Million. It gets better with every listen.
What can your fans expect from you guys in 2017?
MK – Lots of touring and lots of new music. That’s all, really. We’re taking it all by ear, listening to our fans, putting on the best shows we can, and making it bigger and better.
CW – We’re making a ton of music right now and are about to play a bunch of shows, and we tend to test out material a fair amount, as well as play out unreleased versions and VIPs of our own remixes and originals. So expect some really special moments on tour.________________________________________________________________________________
