Marty Stuart and the Fantastic Superlatives, by Alysse Gafkjen

What if I told you about a country artist who came out of Philadelphia? You’d probably be skeptical. What if I told you that he’s actually from Philadelphia, Mississippi?

Marty Stuart is from Philadelphia, Mississippi.

Setting aside the fact that you probably should give country artists from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania a chance too, Marty Stuart comes with all the country credentials you need. But being born with the right credentials and being up to the task to make a name for yourself in country music are two entirely different things.

Marty Stuart has what it takes.

Marty Stuart, by David McClisterIn fact, as a five time Grammy-winner, Stuart can credibly call himself a country music legend. Stuart made a name for himself in the early ’90s with a string of country hits, including “Hillbilly Rock,” “Western Girls,” and “Tempted.” He also garnered notice for his notable choice (at the time in country music anyways) to not wear a cowboy hat, which basically everybody was wearing on stage at the time.

That’s certainly not his only genre-bending accomplishment though. It extends to his musical versatility. Although well-versed in traditional country music, some of his best works have subverted the traditional country sound and blended them early rock sounds like rockabilly and honky tonk. Much of the influence of early rock came from a childhood fascination with California, particularly sounds like the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and Glen Campbell’s Wichita Lineman.

More recently, Stuart has released his latest album Way Out West on March 10th with his longtime band The Fabulous Superlatives—guitarist Kenny Vaughan, drummer Harry Stinson, and bassist Chris Scruggs. The album is both classic Marty Stuart as well as a progression in his sound, with many notable four-part harmonies and guitar pickings.

Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives have been touring the country in support of the album, including a stop on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The shows are quickly selling out, so be sure to see him while you can.
