You have always had an interest in technology (which eventually led to programming and graphic design). What are some of the things in tech that interests you the most at the moment?
I’ve always been fascinated with technology. As of now, I’m certainly paying attention to any new developments within music technology, as this is a part of my craft. On a side note, I actually also bought Spectacles, which is a really cool gadget. I’ve even tried it out at some of my performances.
You recently mentioned in an interview that you were “temporarily” retiring the mask as the concept ended in a trilogy (“Faded”, “Sing Me to Sleep”, “Alone”). Is this a sign that the direction of your sound in music will change?
Let me correct myself and say that I won’t actually retire the mask. I understand that many people are curious about my mask, as it’s not about me wanting to hide my identity. I wear the mask to symbolize that we are all the same and we are all equal. Anyone could be the person behind the mask and we can all achieve amazing things. As for the next direction of my musical sound, I’m always trying to develop my music, based on the inspirations I get from my surroundings.
In 2016 you were on tour in Europe and Asia. What were a few things you learned while on the road?
One thing I learned was that touring is certainly hard work! When I’m performing multiple shows in a row, there’s not too much time off. But on the other hand, I got to experience new places and explore different cultures, as well as meeting many of my amazing fans from around the world.
Seeing so many different cultures, which city was the most interesting to you?
That’s a difficult question, as so many places I’ve visited has given me memories for a lifetime. I certainly had a lot of fun during my Asian tour, and enjoyed visiting Hong Kong. The music video for “Sing Me To Sleep” was also shot in Hong Kong.
Speaking of traveling, what are the few things you miss about your hometown (Bergen, Norway) while you’re on tour?
I definitely miss seeing my family and friends, as well as my dog Happy. However, the people around me are very supportive, which makes it easier to cope with.
List your top 3 most influential/favorite locations in Norway?
That’s a good one. I would start off by naming the mountains that surround Bergen. You may have seen them in the music video for “Alone”. As for other influential locations in Norway, it’s really difficult to point out selected few. I would recommend visitors to check out the amazing landscapes and nature around Norway. Especially with the fjords in western Norway, as well as northern Norway where you might experience northern lights if you are lucky.
The message of “unity” is very important to you and your music. How did this idea of #YouAreNotAlone come together for the music video for “Alone”?
The main message that we tried to express in the video is that we are all in this together. That you are not alone. It is a continuation of the concept and storyline of my previous music videos, as well as being the main message for me as an artist as well.
Once the track was finalized, the phrase “I know I’m not alone” also stood out, and it made perfect sense for the video concept. I had a great time shooting it in my hometown of Bergen, where we gathered a large group of Walkers.
What can we expect from you in 2017 and what are you most excited for?
In 2017, people can expect lots of new music, as well as many live performances. I’m going on my first European headliner club tour in February, which will be great. I’m also really excited for my tour in North & Central America, as it will be my first time there.
One more thing, I just want to use this opportunity to thank all of my fans for their amazing support, as none of this would be possible without them.
